Individual ePortfolios (Work in Progress)

In the galaxy of ePortfolio systems, the individual ePortfolio is the system used by an individual to collect, select, reflect on and exploit his/her learning outcomes. It is a kind of personal ePortfolio management system or ePortfolio organiser. It differs from community and organisational ePortfolio systems that are designed to manage a number of individual ePortfolios.
Individual ePortfolio

At any one time, a person (pupil, student, professional, citizen) interacts with a number of different organisations. For example, a professional nurse might interact with

  • one or more hospitals
  • a professional body or trade union
  • a number of peers
  • training providers
  • informal and formal social networks

Each of these institutions and networks might have their own ePortfolio / personal data management system (competency management, continuing professional development management, training management, etc.) and what is important is that one has a sense of continuity across those different environments, being able to collect from different sources and publish data to other targets.

This is why we suggest to use the concept of ePortfolio Organiser when speaking of the system used by individuals to manage their eportfolio and to leave the concept of ePortfolio Management System to organisational systems used to manage a number of different ePortfolios. The curriculum vitae (CV) will be one type of data produced by eportfolio organisers to be consumed by ePortfolio Management Systems or employment systems.

In the other pages of this section, you should find more information on the tools used by individuals to manage their learning and development. You should visit the other sections to explore how different learning entities (communities, organisations, territories and sectors) use the ePortfolio for their own learning or to manage the learning of their community.
