The Department of Education and Skills is led by the Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairi Quinn. Its mission is the provision of high-quality education in order to enable individuals to achieve their full potential and to participate fully as members of society. Each learner should be enabled to contribute to Ireland's social, cultural and economic development.

H2 provides information and communications technology (ICT) in education consultancy mainly on the development and management of ICT based schools projects, training programmes for teachers in the use of ICT, the development and monitoring of ICT in education policy and advice on innovative curriculum practice.
