Don’t forget the e of ePortfolios by Toni Soto

For some years now, the Colegio Apóstol Santiago of Vigo (Spain) has had a Mahara ePortfolio available to students and teachers of the secondary school. Our Mahara is linked to Moodle for single sign-on. I started to use Mahara to introduce my students (and myself) to the concept of ePortfolios. The goal was to create an ePortfolio for science to present at the end of the course. I already had an idea about what I wanted and expected from my students. But the first problem I had to face was not a pedagogical but an ICT issue. I soon realized that I had to teach my students to use Mahara.

‘Digital Badges make progress’

A recent survey into the implementation of Open Badges, based within the UK, has confirmed that show that there is a lot of interest in their use, but the majority of institutions who responded[1] are at an exploratory stage.  Specifically, the concept of Open Badges seemed to be accepted, but there were several issues raised that are inhibiting their adoption.  These fall into two main categories:

  1. Institutional level consultation

New Jisc Study in the UK.

In the UK Jisc is undertaking a Study on “Technology for employability”.  Part of this is exploring how e-portfolios are being used in the higher education, further education and skills sectors, specifically in relation to developing student employability.

If this is of interest to you and you have experience to contribute, please consider completing the  online survey.  This can be reached at https://jisc.researchfeedback.net/wh/s.asp?k=143168770453 – there is only one page of questions and it will be open until Friday 5 June.

The Open Badge Passport will contribute to establishing trust in learning, employment and citizenship

AUSTIN, TX – March 10, 2015 –

The Open Badge Passport has been announced as one of the thirteen winners of the Digital Media Learning (DML) Trust Challenge. The announcement was made by educational innovator Richard Culatta, director of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology at the SXSWedu conference in Austin, TX.

Applicants from 22 countries tackled some of the thorniest issues around trust, privacy, and safety that are critical to learning in an open online world: How can learners exercise control over who sees and uses their data? What tools are needed need to navigate, collaborate, and learn online with confidence? What solutions will foster greater civility and respect in online learning environments?

Open Passport: Reinventing the ePortfolio from Open Badges?

There are two possible approaches to connecting Open Badges with ePortfolios: assimilation and accommodation. Assimilation looks at Open Badges as a nice add-on to ePortfolios. This can be done by adding a plug-in to an existing piece of software. It is what "Moodle as issuer, Mahara as displayer" (link).

EUfolio: Pilot Updates and comparison of ePortfolio platforms

EUfolio. EU classroom ePortfolios is a project devoted to pilot teaching with both Mahara and O365 as platforms for ePortfolios in lower secondary classrooms in Cyprus, Ireland, Lithuania, Slovenia and Spain.

At the project's partner meeting in Cyprus on 25 and 26 September, the piloting partners presented some of the results of their (still ongoing) pilots. The meeting was preceded by a workshop for using MS Office 365 as an ePortfolio platform.

The findings of EUfolio so far are: For a successful implementation of ePortfolios, teachers have to be put in the center first. This is, how they get acquainted to the learner-centered way of working with ePortfolios in the classroom. Assessment for learning - including self-assessment of the students and peer-assessment - also plays a big role in the ePortfolio approach.
