There are two possible approaches to connecting Open Badges with ePortfolios: assimilation and accommodation. Assimilation looks at Open Badges as a nice add-on to ePortfolios. This can be done by adding a plug-in to an existing piece of software. It is what "Moodle as issuer, Mahara as displayer" (link).

EUfolio. EU classroom ePortfolios is a project devoted to pilot teaching with both Mahara and O365 as platforms for ePortfolios in lower secondary classrooms in Cyprus, Ireland, Lithuania, Slovenia and Spain.
At the project's partner meeting in Cyprus on 25 and 26 September, the piloting partners presented some of the results of their (still ongoing) pilots. The meeting was preceded by a workshop for using MS Office 365 as an ePortfolio platform.
The findings of EUfolio so far are: For a successful implementation of ePortfolios, teachers have to be put in the center first. This is, how they get acquainted to the learner-centered way of working with ePortfolios in the classroom. Assessment for learning - including self-assessment of the students and peer-assessment - also plays a big role in the ePortfolio approach.

The Europortfolio team presented on July 2 2014 the "ePortfolios and Open Badges Maturity Matrix". The objective was to collect feedback from practitioners and experts on a document that is aimed at helping organisations to plan and reflect on current developments and lay the foundations for the development of a review tool (self-assessment) that will be used to plan, monitor and review ePortfolios and Open Badges policies, technologies and practices.
What was presented is an alpha version (draft) of the Matrix and we are looking forward to the feedback of the community to produce a beta version that will be used to build the self-assessment tool. Based on the outcomes of the self-assessment tool's exploitation, a final version of the Matrix will be produced.

There’s no doubt that, over the course of the last twenty years, different educational reforms and the widespread introduction of ICT have provided the perfect excuse for a wholesale rethinking of the education system, or at the very least for questioning it. However, these reforms and transformations have done little to address issue of how learning assessment can be performed to respond to new scenarios. Additionally, if all this takes place in a digital environment, the challenge is still greater.
